About the take-home pay calculator
What is take-home pay?
Gross pay is your salary before any deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after deductions such as Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments.
A £40,000 gross salary is not the same as £40,000 take-home pay. Tax, National Insurance and other deductions reduce the amount that reaches your bank account.
Why does take-home pay change as salary changes?
Income Tax and National Insurance are calculated using thresholds and rates, so an increase in gross salary does not translate pound-for-pound into take-home pay.
Workplace pension contributions also reduce take-home pay. For Civil Service Alpha members, the calculator includes Alpha employee contribution rates.
Student loan repayments can reduce take-home pay where applicable, and salary sacrifice can also change your taxable pay and deductions.

If you're in the Civil Service Alpha scheme, you can also model how your pay and career plans could affect your pension.
